Characteristics:
Founded in 1987, accepted in 1990 by TICA, and the CFA in 2000, the Selkirk Rex is a sturdy, large bone/frame cat with a unique set of genes causing curly coats. Round head, short muzzle and round eyes. They are medium-to-large build, and share traits with other cats in the "rex" class, which refers to breeds that carry the genetic mutation for curly or wavy hair, such as the Devon Rex. Plush, curly hair that has earned the nickname "the cat in sheep's clothing." Curly whiskers are present at birth. The curly-haired gene is dominant, but not all Selkirks are born with these ringlets. Some have straight hair.
Personality:
The Selkirk Rex is very affectionate and loyal. They make excellent lap cats, require attention yet are also very patient, and can be very animated. Another appealing aspect of the Selkirk Rex is their playful manner. Selkirks are often described as "wanting their people" so if you are looking for a feline that will love you as much as you love them, this is the breed for you!
Nutrition:
High quality food will help contribute to overall health, including coat health, and longevity of life. Treats, while important to proper training (and let's be real, it's all about the treats :)) should account for no more than 10% of the total dietary intake. All cats require access to clean, fresh water around the clock.
Grooming:
The Selkirk Rex requires little attention to their coat. A bi-weekly brushing is recommended using a wide tooth comb or brush. Additional brushing may be required during the shedding season to prevent napping. However, with any curly hair, over-brushing can cause frizzing of the coat. Bathing is not generally required, but if a bath is needed, it's best to blot dry with a towel, changing towels as needed. Using blow dryers can also frizz the curly coat.
